How to read it: rows show lunar age; columns show lunar month. “Boy” and “Girl” are labels in the folklore chart, not medical predictions.

Use converted dates, not direct numbers.

The most common chart-reading mistake is to use Western age and a Gregorian month directly.

First calculate lunar age at the time of conception. Traditional age is one at birth and increases at Chinese New Year. Next convert the Gregorian conception date to its Chinese calendar month. Only then should you use the row and column in this table.

For example, a conception on 10 June 2026 falls in Chinese calendar month 4, not month 5 or Gregorian June. Our calculator performs this conversion with locally bundled calendar data.

What happens in a leap month?

The Chinese calendar occasionally repeats a month number to keep the calendar aligned with the seasons. This table has only twelve columns, so it has no separate leap-month column. We follow the common online convention of using the repeated month’s number: leap month 6 uses column 6.

This is a declared convention, not a universally documented historical rule. Different chart traditions may handle leap months differently.

Why another chart may look different.

The 18–45 by 1–12 version is widely reproduced online, but there is no verified single “original” master chart. Variants may use different age ranges or contain individual cell differences. This site consistently uses the table above and does not call it a guaranteed or authentic medical method.

Regardless of which version is used, its result remains folklore. See the scientific accuracy review for the research evidence.
