Why lunar age is often one or two years higher.

Western age begins at zero and changes on your birthday. Traditional Chinese nominal age begins at one and changes for everyone at Chinese New Year.

This is not total days lived divided by 29.53. That different calculation measures elapsed lunar months, not the traditional nominal age used by the gender chart.

The formula used here is target lunar year − birth lunar year + 1. A birth date before Chinese New Year belongs to the previous lunar year. A target date before that Gregorian year’s Chinese New Year also belongs to the previous lunar year. Using actual lunar years handles both cases automatically.

For the gender chart, use lunar age on the conception date, not your age today. The traditional table only covers lunar ages 18–45; this standalone calculator can show ages outside that range.

People born during a leap month do not gain an extra year. Leap months affect month numbering, not the lunar-year difference used for nominal age.
