Chinese Gender Calendar FAQ

Understand the inputs, calendar boundaries, chart limitations, and privacy behavior before using the traditional table.

What is the Chinese calendar for baby gender?

It is a folklore chart that pairs the mother’s lunar age at conception with the Chinese calendar month of conception. It returns a traditional Boy or Girl label, not a medical prediction or a reliable way to determine biological sex.

How does the Chinese Gender Calendar work?

The traditional chart matches the mother’s lunar age at conception with the lunar month of conception. Their intersection contains a Boy or Girl label. The calculator performs both calendar conversions for you.

How do you use the Chinese calendar for baby gender?

First calculate the mother’s lunar age at conception. Next convert the conception date to its Chinese calendar month. Then find the cell where that age row and month column meet. Our calculator does all three steps from two Gregorian dates, or you can use the complete chart and annual month tables.

How accurate is the Chinese Gender Calendar?

No. A 2010 population study of 2,840,755 births found the method performed no better than chance. It is a folklore activity, not a medical test or a reliable way to determine a baby’s biological sex.

What if I do not know my exact conception date?

You can estimate it from the first day of your last menstrual period by adding 14 days, or from an estimated due date by subtracting 266 days. These are approximations, especially when cycles vary.

How are leap months handled?

This site uses the common online convention of assigning a leap month the same chart column as the regular month it repeats. Leap sixth month therefore uses month 6. No single historical rule is universally established.

Why does the chart use lunar age?

The widely circulated chart uses traditional Chinese nominal age: a baby is counted as one at birth, and age increases at Chinese New Year. This differs from Western age, which starts at zero and increases on birthdays.

Are my dates stored or sent anywhere?

No. The calculators run entirely in your browser. This site does not transmit your calculator inputs to an application server, save them in cookies, or keep them after you leave or refresh the page.

Can I use the chart with twins or multiples?

The table returns one label for one age-and-month combination. It has no separate rules for twins or multiples and cannot provide individual results for each baby.

Can I use an IVF or embryo transfer date?

Yes. Following the reference chart convention, select IVF and enter the embryo transfer date. This is only a lookup convention; transfer and fertilization may have occurred on different dates.

Why does another website give a different result?

Sites may use different chart variants, age rules, conception estimates, calendar data, or leap-month conventions. Compare the lunar age, lunar month, and exact table cell—not just the final label.

Can the calendar help me choose my baby’s sex?

No. There is no scientific evidence that the mother’s lunar age or lunar conception month can determine or influence biological sex. Do not use this folklore table for medical or family-planning decisions.

Which years and ages are supported?

Date tools accept Gregorian dates from 1900 through 2100, with Hong Kong Observatory official overrides for 1901–2100. The traditional chart only has rows for lunar ages 18–45.
